This digital portfolio contains a collection of work created over the last 15 months for three units of my A-levels in Textile and Fine art. My photography work has not been related to fashion so is not included, but could be easily incorporated into future projects as it is a keen interest of mine which I envisage would be useful in the course, as all things printed, posted and illustrated can be captured using photography.
My main interest however lies in textiles where I have been able to experiment with numerous techniques, including soldering, batique, appliqué, reverse appliqué, shibori and hand and machine embroidery.
The work I have submitted evolved from research beginning with museum visits including the Manchester art gallery and Plat hall, costume through the ages which helped to inspire my regency dress. Further research was conducted in my college’s library allowing me to use a range of resources from the internet and fashion publications, from which I identified a number of designers whose work I particularly admired. During my last project I found the work of the Mulleavy sisters and their collections over the last three years to be particularly inspiring for my theme of Marine life, as each of their garments seemed to capture the essence of ocean life and recreate the flowing movement of fish with the range of materials used in each of their collections.
I am a passionate recycler of materials and find it impossible to dispose of anything, paper or fabric which I can incorporate in some future work. Although the fast changing trends and fashion movements seem to contradict my ideals, trends are forever being revived and re-mastered as all things once old become vintage and desired once again.
I am looking forward to being able to apply my creative abilities to work in the fashion industry, to produce original and imaginative new designs.
